A word of two syllables is stressed on the first syllable, as in mater.
In words of three or more syllables, the stress is on the penult (next to the last) syllable if it is long, as in Romani, (either by nature or by position); if the penult is short, the stress falls on the antepenult (second form the last) syllable, as legite.
Except in monosyllables, the ultima (last) syllable is never stressed.
